Military Appreciation

Posted on May 15, 2019 at 10:55 AM

Dear Saints;

The Month of May is set aside for appreciating our military services. May 18th is nationally recognized as Armed Forces Day honoring all those who have sworn an oath to defend our constitution from all enemies both foreign and domestic. The month is closed out with Memorial Day on May 27th honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation. Such recognition and appreciation of those who have served and are currently serving in our military is important for several reasons.

First, it reminds us that freedom is not free. Because we live in a world under the dominion of spiritual forces opposed to God, we must face evil head on. Satan continues his rebellion through mankind working his murderous plans in the world ever since Cain killed Able. He continues to deceive the nations by blinding the eyes to the glorious light of the gospel of grace. The cost of our liberty from such evil is revealed for all time in the willing sacrifice of Jesus as he laid down his life for all humanity. Freedom requires sacrifice and the liberty we enjoy was payed for by those who willingly sacrificed their tomorrows for our freedoms today.

Second, in honoring the men and women who have and are serving in the military we are celebrating the greatest display of love on this earth. Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” While the ultimate sacrifice may be appreciated as a sacrifice for our freedom, the personal reasons for such sacrifices are not ideological or political in nature. Ask any combat veteran why he took the risk and the answer will always have something to do with his buddies. It is love for our friends that motivates us to make the sacrifices we make for liberty. The personal concern for the welfare of others, love, makes us willing to lay down our lives for our friends. That love is the very character of God shining through the terrible darkness of war.

Finally, military appreciation events give us each an opportunity to express our thanks to our citizen-warriors for their dedication to our peace and security. Regardless of the role they fill in the military, the sailors, airmen, soldiers and marines perform their duties and complete their assignments as members of a powerful force for peace. No one prays harder for peace than the ones who bear the burden of war. Their overriding mission is the security of our nation so we may enjoy the freedoms God has given to everyman. We are grateful for the men and women who are willing to give their lives to a cause greater than themselves. Join me in prayer for all those who face the evil of this world that the Father would strengthen and encourage them in their service. John
