Lately I have been impressed with what Paul called, “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” in Romans 8. This phrase describes what sets us free from all condemnation under the “law of sin and death”. It is the law or principle of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus that guarantees our freedom from all condemnation even though we yet live in a physical body that also contains the habit and power of sin in it. As a result, all believers are plagued with an intense battle within so that when we want to do what is right, we cannot; and when we want to quit doing what is wrong, we do it anyway. In the middle of this inner struggle we are assured that we are freed from condemnation because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law or principle of sin and death.
We are all aware of the law of sin and death. This simply means that if we sin, we experience death because the wages of sin is death. What sets us free from this principle of sin and death is what Paul calls the principle of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. It is our new life in Christ Jesus given to us by the Spirit of God when we are born again that frees us from death despite our struggle with sin. Because our “old man” or natural person we were is crucified and buried with Christ and a new person is raised up in Christ we now have the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. We are no longer the same person we were before we were born again. We have been created in righteousness and true holiness so that we are dead indeed to sin and alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Likewise, the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus means that we are no longer slaves to sin, but are now slaves to righteousness. Not only are we dead to sin, but we are also dead to the law by the body of Christ so that we can be married to another, even Christ who rose from the dead. The Spirit of life in Christ Jesus includes the privilege of being led, taught, reminded, comforted, and empowered to love others by the indwelling Spirit of God rather than trying to understand and keep the law of God. The principle of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus means that we are no longer under law, but under grace. We no longer live the old lifestyle of law and lies, but a new lifestyle of grace and truth.
Finally, the principle of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus means that we are forever joined to Christ in his victorious, resurrection life. We have been given the Spirit of Christ living within. We have been given the mind of Christ as opposed to our carnal mind of the flesh. We are said to be members of the body of Christ and share in the same high calling of God to love others like Christ. It is our union with Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection that makes us brand new persons who are dead indeed to sin and capable of walking in newness of life. Because we are joined to him what is true of him is true of us. Because he is worthy, we are worthy. Because he is loved of the Father we are loved. Because he is important in God’s eternal plan we are important. As Paul told the Colossians, we are dead and our life is hid with Christ in God. Jesus is our life so that we may say with Paul, “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me.” The principle of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus not only sets us free from the law of sin and death, but also gives us an eternal hope of everlasting glory.
