Declaration of Dependence

Dear Saints;


This week we celebrate Independence Day as a nation. On July 4, 1776 the continental congress courageously declared their independence from the tyranny of British rule that had become oppressive and intolerable. It is clear from the wording of this declaration of independence that a simultaneous “declaration of dependence” was also enacted. The use of the terms “Laws of Nature” and “Nature’s God” as well as the statement in the preamble, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights” suggest the founders were declaring their dependence on a higher authority than their government to make this declaration.


The last sentence in the Declaration of Independence demonstrates beyond all doubt their total dependence upon God to achieve their political independence, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Their declaration of independence was supported by their declaration of dependence upon the “protection of divine Providence”. Such a declaration of dependence is what gave them the hope to pledge their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. Our Declaration of Independence we celebrate every July 4th is really a declaration of our dependence on God for his protection and guidance.


Unfortunately, this national declaration of dependence on God has become almost nonexistent over the last two centuries. We have become far more dependent on our political influence, military might, and abundant treasure than on divine Providence. It seems the only time there is even a hint at dependency on God is in a time of national tragedy. After the 911 attacks our representatives made a show of singing “God Bless America” on the capitol steps, but soon returned to business as usual. Whether it’s understood or not our nation depends on the mercy and grace of God for its continued existence.


Maybe we can remind ourselves and make others aware of this “declaration of dependence” when we celebrate the 4th of July each year. In addition to celebrating our independence from a tyrannical government we can also celebrate our dependence on the divine Providence that makes such independence possible. The history of this country repeatedly reveals the protection of “divine Providence” that the founders firmly relied upon to pledge their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. As they faced overwhelming odds against their success in their fight for liberty it was their faith in the protection of God that gave them hope.


Like the founding fathers we too are facing “the times that try men’s souls”. Now more than ever we need God to bless America and “crown our good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea”. The future of our country does not depend on our politicians, our wealth, or even our military might; our future rests in the hands of the divine Providence that began this nation. Let us declare our dependence on him!
