Vote Responsibly

Posted on October 20, 2020 at 10:00 AM

Dear Saints,

The government our founding fathers established for this nation was unique to the world. Having endured both religious and political persecution they sought to establish a government of the people, by the people, and for the people that would prevent such tyrannical institutions from abusing God ordained power to govern others. Using biblical principles of equality and freedom for all they declared their independence as a nation and developed a constitution that would ensure that liberty for future generations. They relied totally upon divine guidance and provision to secure the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for every citizen of the new nation.

A vital component of such a government is the right of each citizen to vote for those who would represent their interests, values, and concerns in the decision-making process of the nation. In a nation of 320 million people a single vote may seem to have little or no significance, but that simple action is far more important than we might realize. By voting for those we want to represent us we are exercising a right that much of the world does not have. We are engaging in a process, imperfect as it may seem, that gives us a voice in our government as a free people. In exercising this right we are publicly declaring our stand for the liberties and freedoms we enjoy as a nation.

With the freedom to vote comes the responsibility to be informed. True liberty always carries with its certain responsibilities and when it comes to voting we have a responsibility to ensure we know who or what it is we are voting for. Does the person you are voting for represent your interests, values, and concerns? How does the issue you are voting on affect your life or the lives of others? These and similar questions make our right to vote more difficult than simply casting a ballot. Many voters get confused when confronted with the process to say nothing of the intentional lies and misinformation of modern political campaigns. The heated arguments and hateful speech so prevalent in the campaign process overwhelm voters to the point they simply opt out of the process giving up their right to vote altogether.

Despite the confusion and overwhelming emotions associated with the process believers have the necessary resource to vote responsibly. We have much more than the media hype and conflicting reports vying for our vote. We have the Spirit of truth living within us that Jesus promised would guide us into all truth. A truly informed vote requires answering only one question, “How does God want you to vote?” You mean that God cares about my vote and will lead me in the process? Of course he does! Regardless of the confusion surrounding the election process each believer has the Comforter living inside the new person God has made us to be in Christ. And we can hear that “still, small voice” inside our own minds telling us what he wants us to vote for.

The key to preserving the government our nation was founded upon is individual citizens exercising their liberty to vote through the personal leadership of the Spirit of truth. Only the indwelling Spirit can cut through the confusion and empower each of us to vote responsibly. I encourage all of you to exercise your liberty to vote according to the direction and leadership of the Spirit of truth living in you.

John
